Mint

Background

Because it has been cultivated for so long, it is uncertain where mint originated. There are records of its use in ancient Rome and Greece, even being tied to mythology. It is even sited in the Bible. It was used in early versions of toothpaste, used for calming an upset stomach and added to sauces. With it’s potent, fresh smell, it was used to lift the mood. Americans can, perhaps, thank the Puritans as they were, possibly, the people to bring it to the New World.

Uses

Extremely versatile, Mint can be made into a tea to calm the nerves and the stomache or scattered around to freshen the air. Freeze them in ice cubes to add a minty zest to your cold drinks. You can use cooled mint tea to relieve sunburn by applying it to the burn with a cotton ball. Mint stems can also be placed in areas of the house where ants get in to repel the insect. Chop it into a salad or add to the top of cooked vegetables to spice them up!

Planting and Care

Because these plants spread aggressivesly, make sure you find a spot where you won’t mind them taking over. Keeping them in containers is another option. After the chance of frost has passed, plant outside. Plant in full sun or partial shade where the soil is damp, but well-draining. Plan the root balls 18 inches to 2 feet apart and cover with 1-2 inches of soil. Water regularly, but just to keep soil moist. Overwatering can rot the roots. Fertilize every 4 to 6 weeks.

Harvest and Storage

When plant has multiple stems that are 6 to 8 inches long, mint is ready to harvest. Don’t harvest more than one third of the plant at a time. Can store in the refrigerator fresh for 3 to 5 days or chpped and frozen. Dry the leaves on racks and then store in airtight containers.
